Mentoring We invite college students, graduate students and artists from the community to participate in our exciting new program Alabama Charcoal, aimed at helping underserved youth by offering rigorous drawing and portfolio development classes focusing on college/career planning in the fields of art and design. Alabama Charcoal will run from September 2010- May 2011. Mentors are essential for this program in order to offer the best one-on-one support to high school students. or call 205-328-0553 ext. 24 Alabama Charcoal Art Mentors: We are looking for 10 emerging artist to be art mentors in our after-school programs. Art mentors must be caring and creative individuals, able to commit to at least 3 hours once a week, for the entire program. The goal is to inspire and facilitate creative, academic, and personal achievements in the students. Art mentors must also have strong drawing skills. This will be a rewarding experience because mentors will have clear, teaching responsibilities, an opportunity to work in Space One Eleven’s professional studios, and impact high school student’s development. Alabama Charcoal Writing Mentors: We are looking for two writing mentors to tutor seniors on their college applications and essays. Writing mentors will have the responsibility to organize writing workshops and have the availability to meet with students individually to edit and brainstorm college essays. Strong writing skills are necessary, as well as the ability to commit to at least 1 hour a week. Writing mentors must have gone through the college application process to apply for this opportunity. Space One Eleven’s internship program uniquely provides a behind the scenes experience working in a nationally recognized not for profit gallery. While we cannot offer paid-internships, the experience working with artists and arts professionals will provide valuable skills for future jobs.
