Space One Eleven is excited to present its inaugural Art in the Making Student Exhibition. Art in the Making is a studio arts program for adults age 55 and better, who participate in art classes taught by professional artist teachers. In this inaugural exhibit students of artist Martha Ann Doyal’s Introduction to Drawing class and UAB painting professor Gary Chapman’s Expressive Mark Making class will present works they completed during the eight week course.
Participating students are:
Jackie Antonio, Rachel Bates, Eunice Berry, Mary Helen Crowe, Vicki Farley, Kelley Fitzpatrick, Jo Anne Gaede, Jane Graffeo, Melanie Parker Grinney, Ellen Justice, Ethan Lewis, Carol Long, Laura Murphey, Katherine Pearson, Sonja Rieger, Jan Savage, Carolyn Sherer, Cheryl Star, Cathy Stave, Rebecca Thornley, Marcia Unger, Marshall Urist, Jutta Von Buchholtz, and Nancy Ward.
Space One Eleven’s Art in the Making will continue this summer, reaching older adults residing at Greenbriar at the Altamont, and Veranda at Park Place. Art professor at Tuskegee University, Bruce Phillips, and Chair of Alabama School of Fine Art’s visual arts department, Darius Hill, will be teaching mixed media art classes at these senior living communities. Beginning in September, painting professor and Associate Dean at Samford University, Larry Thompson, will teach a painting class at Space One Eleven and ceramic artist Carolyn Wass will teach a ceramics class. Enrollment for September classes will open later this summer.
Art in the Making is Space One Eleven’s newest art education program and is designed to enhance the quality of life for older adults through skill-based learning that brings joy, connection, improved health and well-being. The program serves participants who have no experience in the arts, as well as adults who have past experience but would enjoy enhancing their skills or learning a new medium in a social environment. Free or reduced tuition is available for qualifying participants. For more information about Art in the Making, contact Janna Phillips, Space One Eleven’s Arts Education Coordinator at (205) 328-0553 ext. 24 or via email at JannaPhillips@spaceoneeleven.org.
This project is made possible, in part, through support from Aroha Philanthropies, Space One Eleven’s Board of Directors, private, corporate and individual donors.
