Studio art classes for young artists in grades 2 – 12
City Center Art is Space One Eleven’s afterschool studio art program for students of all skill levels and is designed to build visual communication skills and foster creative thinking. Through individually conceived projects and collaborations, young artists learn the elements of art and principles of design, strengthen foundation skills, and further their understanding of art criticism, art theory, and art history.
Teaching artists balance instruction between creating and responding—students make, discuss, and write about their work—thereby facilitating a transformative learning experience for young artists.
Space One Eleven’s philosophy is to provide an environment in which young artists can learn, create, explore, and forge their own path into the world of art. All CCA students participate in the student art exhibition at the end of the semester.
Students are welcome to join the art class any time during the school year if seats are available. Class cost will be pro-rated for those who join later in the semester.
Free or Reduced Tuition
Through our scholarship application, art class fees are based on a sliding scale. As a result, families may qualify for free or reduced tuition through the generosity of foundations and private contributors.

Grades 2-3
Young artists in grades 2-3 explore a variety of artistic mediums, practice creative thinking and problem solving, develop new tools for self-expression, and, most importantly, have fun making art! Our teaching artist will guide young artists through projects tailored to their age and skill levels to help them develop as artists and build important creative skills.
All skill levels are welcome.
Teaching Artist: Tyler Carlisle
Dates: Tuesdays, January 23 – May 14, 2024 (14 weeks)
Time: 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm
$460 for the semester. All materials are provided.
Grades 4-5
Young artists in grades 4-5 work in a variety of mediums such as paint, clay, charcoal, and ink. They will practice and expand on their skills in drawing, color theory, art history, studio maintenance and how to formally evaluate their own artwork and the artwork of others.
All skill levels are welcome.

Dates: Mondays, January 22 – May 13, 2024 (14 weeks)
Time: 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm

Grades 6-8 – Waitlist
**This class is currently full, but you can still register for the waitlist and we will notify you when a spot opens up.**
Young artists in grades 6-8 continue to improve upon their art-making skills with a focus on foundations and conceptual thinking.
Young artists who wish to apply to the Alabama School of Fine Arts will receive guidance during the application process including portfolio review and development.

Grades 9-12
City Center Art for high school students is a rigorous multi-media art class with a balance of foundations/essential skills and independent projects. With guidance from the teaching artist, students will develop and execute individually conceived projects to further their technical control of various mediums and strengthen their conceptual skills.
In addition, students will learn about art-related careers and opportunities. Juniors and seniors receive guidance for college applications and essays while building visual arts portfolios to increase college opportunities.
All skill levels are welcome.
Teaching Artist: Andy Jordan
Dates: Saturdays, January 13 – April 27, 2024 (14 weeks). Most classes will meet in the studio. Field trips to local institutions may also take place during the semester.
Time: 10:00 am to 1:00 pm
