2022 Summer Art Camps Photo Album

Space One Eleven’s summer art camps are a perfect way for young artists to learn a new art form or improve upon their art skills! These camps give young artists ample time to dive into their projects, make friends, and create several finished pieces of work they will be proud of. All camps are taught by working artists in Space One Eleven’s professional art studios.

Drawing Camp 1

June 6-10, 2022

Grades 6-12

The teaching artist lead students in building a foundation for drawing with different media, sharpening their drawing skills, and taught drawing techniques for representing forms and objects from life.

Printmaking Camp

June 6-10, 2022

Grades 6-12

During this camp, young artists learned to use the tools and techniques of various printmaking processes to create multiple images using their own ideas and imagination. The emphasis of this camp was on relief, monoprinting, intaglio, and silkscreen printing. Students learned how to operate the studio printing press as well as how to print on fabric and apparel items.

Zine Making Camp

June 6-10, 2022

Grades 6-12

From the Harlem Renaissance through the 90s, in underground communities, zine’s have remained a favorite among artists as a form of self-publication and expression. This camp introduced students to the open-ended and creative world of zine-making through collage, printmaking, and other mixed media forms of image-making. Students learned a variety of bookbinding techniques, along with the history of DIY art publications.

I’M AN ALABAMA ARTIST, TOO!

June 13-17 and June 20-24, 2022

Grades 2-5

Teaching artists lead young artists in painting, drawing, animating, and more to create works of art through projects influenced by artists from Alabama.

Drawing Camp 2

June 27-July 1, 2022

Grades 6-12

Teaching artist, Andy Jordan, lead students in building a foundation for drawing with different media, sharpening their drawing skills, and teach drawing techniques for representing forms and objects from life.

Digital Art Camp

June 27-July 1, 2022

Grades 6-12

In Digital Art Camp, young artists gained an understanding in the manipulation and augmentation of various digital mediums to create their own original artworks. Students learned various techniques, such as how to composite and edit digital images, construct and combine 3D prints, and code NetArt pieces using HTML and CSS.

Clay Camp

June 27-July 1 and July 11-15, 2022

Grades 6-12

Ceramics camp was two weeks of exploring clay and glazing at the beginning and intermediate level depending on the experience of the student. Students used handbuilding and wheel throwing techniques to create functional and sculptural works that were fired and glazed during the second week.

Finding Your Creative Voice/Creative Writing Camp

July 11-15, 2022

Grades 6-12

Finding Your Creative Voice is a workshop designed to help young creatives unlock their magic. This camp created spaces where ideas are explored and nurtured using spoken word poetry performances to excite and dig into those young minds by building confidence, and helping them to access and unlock their power. It has proven to have a significant increase in self-confidence helping many overcome shyness, fear of public speaking, and other social anxieties.

Sew Cool Fashion Camp

July 11-15 and July 18-22, 2022

Grades 6-12

In this two-week camp, young artists learned intro to sewing, safety practices, sewing machine basics, and how to read a basic pattern and construction of a wearable project. Using their new skills, they transitioned to Fashion Design.  During fashion week they learned basic principles of fashion illustration, vocabulary, proportion, clothing, coloring and more fun stuff that real designers do! The campers created their own clothing line and one complete look from their sketches. Project Runway with a SOE twist!

Architecture Camp

July 18-22, 2022

Grades 6-12

This course sought to educate students on the creative tenets of architecture. After an introduction to the history of architecture and the definition of design, students will took a walk through downtown Birmingham to sketch some of the architecturally significant buildings in our city. Students will then began the process of designing architecture of their own, through creative exercises in drawing and model-making.

Portfolio Development Camp

July 18-22, 2022

Grades 6-12

This intensive, one-week course helped build or enhance young artists’ portfolios who are interested in pursing an art-based higher education. Students strengthened foundation skills by rendering works from still life and had the experience of peer critiques in progress.

Photography Camp (July 25-29)

July 25-29, 2022

Grades 6-12

Young artists learned the foundations of photography, such as composition and lighting, through a digital photography exploration walk. Students learned professional photography practices such as product photography and Photoshop. Along with the foundations and professional practice side of photography, participants also explored unique photographic processes in art such as image transfers, luma prints, and wheat pasting, looking to famous contemporary photographers for inspiration.
