June 27-July 1 and July 11-15, 2022
Grades 6-12
Ceramics camp was two weeks of exploring clay and glazing at the beginning and intermediate level depending on the experience of the student. Students used handbuilding and wheel throwing techniques to create functional and sculptural works that were fired and glazed during the second week. In addition, teaching artist Leah Hamel covered several surface techniques including sgraffito, mishima, and underglaze transfers. Hamel earned her BFA from the University of Alabama at Birmingham where she specialized in ceramics and sculpture. She also holds an MFA from Louisiana State University. She continues to remain active in the Birmingham art community through teaching, volunteering, and exhibiting work.
