2023 Summer Art Camps Photo Album

Space One Eleven’s summer art camps are a perfect way for young artists to learn a new art form or improve upon their art skills! These camps give young artists ample time to dive into their projects, make friends, and create finished pieces of work for the end-of-summer student and teaching artist exhibition. All camps are taught by practicing artists in Space One Eleven’s professional art studios.

I’m an Alabama Artist Too!

Young artists painted, drew, sculpted and more to create works of art through projects influenced by artists from Alabama. 

Drawing Camp 1

June 19 – June 23

Drawing Camp 2

July 10 – July 14

The teaching artist lead students in building a foundation for drawing with different media, sharpening their drawing skills, and teaching drawing techniques for representing forms and objects from life.

Sculpture Camp

Young artists explored and learned new and different ways of sculpting through the medium of plaster. Young artists participated in every step of this art making process from mixing the plaster to creating their own molds and using tools such as chisels and rasps to carve their masterpieces.

Digital Art Camps 1 and 2

June 19 – June 23

June 26 – June 30

This camp introduced young artists to various digital mediums and taught them how to use them to create original artworks. Students learned various techniques including how to composite and edit digital images and vectors, and how to create and edit motion graphics for Augmented Reality.

Portfolio Development Camp

June 26 – June 30

This intensive, one-week course helped students interested in pursuing future art education build and enhance their portfolios. Students strengthened foundation skills by rendering works from still life and gained the experience with peer critiques in progress.

Clay Camp

June 26 – June 30 and July 10 – 14

Ceramics camp was two weeks of exploring high fire clays and glazes at the beginning and intermediate level. Students used hand building and wheel throwing techniques to create functional and sculptural works.

Sew Cool Fashion Camp

July 10 – July 14 and July 17 – 21

In the first week the young artists get an intro to sewing safety practices, sewing machine basics, how to read a basic pattern and construction of a wearable project. Using their new skills, they then transition to fashion design. During fashion week they learn basic principles of fashion illustration, vocabulary, proportion, clothing, coloring, and more fun stuff that real designers do!

Master Class Painting Camp

July 17 – July 21

In this camp, young artists studied portraiture created by the Dutch Golden Age painter, Rembrandt van Rijn. Through keen observation and knowledge of the techniques used by Rembrandt, students completed their own master copy of one of Rembrandt’s works. Students learned sight measuring, color theory, oil painting materials and techniques, and about the life of Rembrandt. 

Printmaking Camp

July 17 – July 21

During this camp, young artists learned to use the tools and techniques of various printmaking processes to create multiple images using their own ideas and imagination. The emphasis of this camp was on relief, monoprinting, intaglio, and silkscreen printing. Students learned how to operate the studio printing press as well as how to print on fabric and apparel items.

Architecture Camp

July 24 – July 28

This course sought to educate students on the creative tenets of architecture. After an introduction to the history of architecture and the definition of design, students sketched some of the architecturally significant buildings in our city and explored drawing techniques. Students then began the process of designing architecture of their own through creative exercises in drawing and model-making.
