“Jesse’s Fear” was actually a response to statements Jesse Jackson made about Barack Obama. He was overheard saying, “…Obama was talking down to black people… I wanna cut his nuts off.” The Piece is in part a direct reference to that comment, but also to the tension that often exists between generations of black men. The older vanguard is often at odds with the younger, up and coming luminaries. The tension in many ways becomes a “dick measuring” contest – older men trying to maintain their status and the younger men trying to prove their worth.
