Bryan Warren

Comic Consciousness is a series of new work that I started during the pandemic. I have always been attracted to the color and composition of comic book panels, but in the last two years the hand lettering has become a primary interest. I love the tight use of language, and the hand drawn feel of the words. Recently, I have been layering other words and images and then covering them with ink, leaving only the word bubble visible. My sense is that this is driving out of our current dialogue around race and identity, things said and unsaid. I have much I am just beginning to explore in this new work.

Bryan Warren is the Director of the Office for Globalization, a Division of Louisville Forward in Louisville Metro Government. Warren is helping to lead the city’s Global Louisville initiative, a public-private effort to bring together government, business and civic leaders to welcome new international residents for economic and community growth.

Prior to his current role at Louisville Metro Government, Warren served as Executive Director of Asia Institute-Crane House, a non-profit Asian community cultural organization in Louisville, Kentucky, and Education Curator for the Speed Art Museum, in Louisville.

He is a Getty Institute NextGen Leadership Fellow and a Leaders in Visual Arts Organizations Fellow, a program funded by the Andy Warhol Foundation.

Bryan is also a working artist, community organizer and curator. As an artist, he has exhibited drawings, ceramics and sculpture throughout the United States. He has worked with communities on arts projects in Kentucky, Mississippi, Indiana and Alabama. As a curator, he has organized exhibitions in the Southeast region.

Bryan believes that working together across sectors and bringing the creative perspectives of people together to build a vision for a thriving community are essential to healthy and positive growth for everyone.
