Alabama Invitational 2023 – Exhibiting Artist

“The Alabama Delta: Glass and Light” celebrates the rich biodiversity of the Delta in an abstract depiction of Delta flora and fauna. As one fortunate to live close by, I marvel at the life and beauty encountered , that must be appreciated when within this environment…preferably with observation while in a kayak.  Moving with a gentle current provides the silence that allows one to hear the birdsongs, the splash of jumping fish and the buzz of insects. A trampled shoreline of a stream can indicate a gator’s night nest. Tree frogs call with enough noise to confuse us with their tiny bodies.  The senses come alive in the Delta. There are no straight lines in the biomorphic shapes of creeks, rivulets, patches of grass. It’s so important to keep this environment alive, and healthily expanding.

This glimpse of Delta is composed of glass panels for the wall and blown objects with encased painted and printed imagery within the glass, that represents growing things in shapes and forms. The glass painting has roots in medieval church window technique, in combination with Culler’s non-traditional approach in the use of these ancient materials:  vitreous enamel and silver stain.
