Alabama Invitational 2023 – Exhibiting Artist

Metal Curtain is the final painting within a large-scale series of works in which fabrics, textiles and folded photographs are painted into the background of a landscape acting simultaneously as both the sky and a veil or curtain. Other paintings within the series include “Overcast” where a dark blue fabric mimics an overcast sky, “Night” in which a trash bag mimics the absence of daylight, and “Sunset” in which a brightly colored quilt resembles a setting sun. “Metal Curtain” acts as a playful twist within the series as a variety of images taken from a landfill located outside of Huntsville are collaged together to create a metallic veil. Replacing the sky with curtains disrupts the visual space as well as the landscape genre. Working in this manner allows the artist to merge a variety of genres, subject matter, and seemingly unrelated interests together into a unified network.
