Annual Student and Teaching Artist Exhibitions

The exhibition showcased works of young artists enrolled in Space One Eleven’s 2016/2017 afterschool art education program and 2017 summer art camps. During the school year, students in grades two through eight participate in Space One Eleven’s City Center Art program, learning elements of art and principles of design while working on individually conceived projects and student collaborations. High school students in Space One Eleven’s Alabama Charcoal afterschool portfolio development program enhance their technical drawing skills, explore concepts of their choice using a wide variety of media, and receive guidance from mentors in portfolio development and college searches and applications.

Rising second through twelve grade students in Space One Eleven’s summer camps explored a wide variety of media including clay, sculpture, animation, photography, textile art, drawing, painting, illustration and portfolio development. Space One Eleven’s art classes and camps are taught by Birmingham artists. These teaching artists exhibited their works during the exhibition.

This program was made possible in part by the Alabama State Council on the Arts, Daniel Foundation of Alabama, EBSCO Industries, Florence S. and William J. Cabaniss Advised Fund, Gratitude Foundation, Jemison Investment Company, Jefferson County Commissioner Sandra Little Brown, Mike & Gillian Goodrich Foundation, Rojo Mexican Grill, Susan Mott Webb Charitable Trust, Wells Fargo, Windgate Charitable Foundation, donors to the Anne Arrasmith Scholarship Fund, individual donors, community supporters, volunteers, mentors, SOE staff and Board of Directors.

The exhibition showcased works of young artists who attended SOE’s 2016 summer art camps. Rising second through fifth graders worked with a variety of art mediums while learning about Alabama artists to coincide with the theme, “I’M AN ALABAMA ARTIST, TOO!” Students learned about influential Alabama artists while realizing they, too, are Alabama artists. Also on exhibit were works created by rising sixth through twelfth grade students who created artwork during SOE’s specialized art camps. These specialized camps concentrated on clay sculpture, textile art, drawing and painting, screen printing, and portfolio development. Artworks by SOE teaching artists, all of whom are practicing artists, were featured in the exhibition
