Elaine Kinnaird

My work focuses on space and shadow. I build landscapes from shadows, which like shadows, scatter and disappear. After all, a shadow is not a picture of an object; it is a thing unto itself. A shadow is a stretched, distorted, wavering, fleeting, and misleading impression of an object. It is a ghost playing tricks, and I aim to capture that intangible thing, making explicit that which is implicit.

Elaine Farley Kinnaird is a Birmingham native who graduated from the Alabama School of Fine Art, receiving the Senior Artist award and graduated from Birmingham Southern College, majoring in Art History with a minor in Art receiving a senior art award at BSC.  From here she was immediately accepted into the Cranbrook Academy of Art and received an MFA in fiber art in 2014. Since graduating she received a Visual Arts Fellowship from the Alabama State Council on the Arts in 2018. She collaborated with a colleague to create an installation at Ground Floor Contemporary which was featured in B-Metro Magazine under the title “Two in the Hand(made)” by Brett Levine in 2017. In 2015 she had her first solo art show at the Alabama School of Fine Art and participated in the Cultural Reservation Podere Conte Ràcani – Sculptor Residency Program, in Umbria, Italy.
