David Baird

Relevance, 35th Anniversary Exhibition II

Working primarily from observation, my paintings attempt to make lasting pictorial statements out of fleeting perceptual experiences. In this translation of experience to painting, contours are blurred and forms submerged in an atmosphere which can only be seen
indirectly, as if through the corner of one’s eye: the sideward glance that turns the familiar into the unfamiliar and makes a whole of separate parts.
In the case of a still life, motifs often present themselves
accidentally, accumulating over time in the studio. These are starting points, taken with immediacy, like an ink spill, then gradually refined over time, held by the act of painting as a moment of stasis in an unstable world.
