Marie Weaver

Relevance, 35th Anniversary Exhibition II

“Spirit, Owl” is one in a current series of forest creatures. My subjects are quite common animals that might be glimpsed on a hike in the woods. Some, like an owl or a red fox, are often not easily seen, so a sighting gives a feeling of wonder or awe, maybe excitement, that lifts a mood, changes one’s perception if only for moments. In each sculpture, I’ve tried to slightly anthropomorphize the animal to hint at the hidden spirit within that may not be so very different from our own. My hope is that the viewer will feel a connection with the animal. Will you decide to make an effort to protect its home?

A long-time resident of Birmingham, Marie Weaver received a BA in Studio Art from the University of Vermont and MFA in Advertising Design from Syracuse University. After studying in the northeast, Marie built her career in Alabama and Georgia. She developed, taught in and directed the graphic design program in the Department of Art and Art History at The University of Alabama at Birmingham from 1990-2003. Her design work has been included in numerous anthologies. Upon moving to Atlanta in 2003 where she initially taught design part-time at The Creative Circus, Weaver gradually shifted to an exclusively fine art practice in printmaking and ceramics. In 2015, she moved with her husband, Steve Harvey, to Philadelphia to be near family.

From 2011-2014 Weaver held an assistantship in the clay program at Callanwolde Fine Arts Center in Atlanta. She is a Fellow of the Hambidge Center for the Creative Arts and Sciences in Rabun Gap, Georgia and a member of the Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsmen. She maintains a studio in the East Falls neighborhood of Philadelphia. For the last 15 years, ceramics has been her medium of choice.
