Through photography, I have focused on the things that make me feel the most seen and comforted: my family, my friends, and my hometown of Birmingham, Alabama. Though I am not surrounded by these things all the time, it is calming to look for representations of them in a given environment. These photos explore the peculiarities of life in the urban neighborhoods I grew up in. Reflections of it appear everywhere I look, even when I’m least expecting. I encourage viewers to also find similar comforts in these photographs. After all, we are more alike than we are different.

Bria Lewis is a recent Auburn University graduate with a B.A. in Studio Art. Growing up in Birmingham, Alabama, she always had a passion for art and fashion. In 2016, she participated in Birmingham Fashion Week’s Rising Design Star competition as a high school senior. In her studies at Auburn, she found a love for photography, ceramics, painting, and drawing. Her work was recently featured in the 2021 Juried Fine Art Student Exhibition at Auburn. There, she won a Joyce and Roger Lethander Merit Award for her photograph, Jump (2021). Through taking various engaging art history courses, she has developed a special interest in contemporary art with a focus on African American contemporary art. She is currently a Programs Assistant at Space One Eleven.
