Sydney Harrington

Continuity, 35th Anniversary Exhibition III

I am fascinated by the physicality and psychology of humans. There is an internal battle within the body- a specific and delicate complexity encompassing the mind. Within each figure or face lies a complex and unique structure that connects us to each other. Through abstraction and configuration, I capture the moments that are typically concealed from the outside world.

Moments of vulnerability, defeat, and brokenness are all made transparent. The subjects depicted in the paintings are not one person, they are a piece of the puzzle that reflects the way we experience the world around us. The color palettes are spontaneous, formed through heavy layering and a constant revisiting of the piece. Human emotion and the experience of that emotion is not always apparent, so in creating this space, I hope to connect us to the bizarre realities of what it is to be human.

Sydney Harrington is a 24-year-old artist living in Bozeman, Montana. Born and raised in Birmingham, Alabama, Sydney realized her passion for painting at a young age. In 2020 the artist graduated from Auburn University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. After graduation, Sydney moved northwest to pursue her painting career.

Since moving to Bozeman in January of 2021, Sydney has taken an interest in wood working. Her job at a furniture design company allows for an alternative creative outlet that inspires her paintings. In the day she spends her time building furniture and, in the evenings, she brings home the scrap wood to paint on.

The up-and-coming artist has since exhibited her work at various local businesses including Lockhorn Cider House (May 2021) and Finks Deli (January 2022). Inspired by all that is around her, Sydney considers painting an essential part of her life and finds art and beauty in everything.
