Celebration, 35th Anniversary Exhibition IV
In 1982 my work shifted from non—objective imagery and art about art to issues of human rights. The projects have included found objects, classical drawing styles, paintings, video, installation and performance. The last time I exhibited at Space One Eleven was shortly after the abortion clinic bombing by Eric Rudolph. Because that show was centered on growing up gay and he had bombed a gay bar in Atlanta, the gallery was watched over by several police groups. Rudolph’s recent appearance in the news again brought forth the ideology of hate as reactionary “Christian” violence.
Minister Pat Roberson’s advocation of the assassination of a country’s president is but another example of the hypocrisy of the radical religious right and how it flies in the face of Christian love. Along with the “Kill a Queer for Christ ” installation, I will exhibit pieces that continue to deal with name-calling. Small paintings from the ongoing “Only Dick” series and embroidered patches from the “Gay Merit Badge” project include slang terms rendered in a pictorial fashion that often robs it of its power. Each project deals with how the “other” functions in a seemingly homogeneous heterosexual social construct. My work in the show touches several themes from violence to humor.
Larry Jens Anderson (1947 – 1991) was an artist, educator, and activist, as well as founding member and curator of the TABOO artist collective, known for its edgy shows and happenings at the height of the AIDS epidemic. Recurring themes in Larry’s work include gender, sexual identity, human rights, politics, religion and mortality expressed through a variety of media including sculpture, painting, drawing and video.
