Women with their Work I: Affect + Action, 2017

Watching the world news makes one more and more aware of the acts of inhumanity performed day after day. It also makes you question if we have learned anything from history. No artist has ever addressed the atrocities of war and acts of violence more powerfully than Francisco Goya. Being familiar with his Disasters of War etchings I felt the perfect way to address today’s events was to use these prints as a historical reference.

I reproduced a selection of his images, enlarged them and then worked into each with drawing, collage, erasure, text, etc. My intent was to put my own stamp on them to relate to ongoing events in the last 200+ years. I wanted to reference atrocities that have impacted society through incredible acts of inhumanity. Hopefully, my series will make the viewer question these and help move us towards a more tolerant world.
