Women with their Work III: Materiality, 2018

This piece started as a conversation between a couple, two large columnar figures talking to each other. His voice projects like the shock waves of a sonic boom—direct and succinct—knowing exactly what is meant. He is logical, clear and pragmatic. Her voice lilts rhythmically like the sound waves of music—poetic, lyrical, symbolic. She is emotional and her words are from the heart; they easily escape like a melody, almost without thought.

They discuss their relationship and lives—the daily occurrences that can be ordinary or extraordinary, the reminiscences of memories, the hopes of the future. Each element between the two is a small tableau within itself. It is a discussion of the moments and events that have happened since his departure from Earth. Whether it be a silent reverie, a laugh, or a verbal explosion. They have travelled a long way with each other and have so much common ground. The compassion and depth in knowing themselves and each other enhances the dialogue.

Words are an imperfect form of communication. No person can ever truly understand what goes on in the minds and hearts of others. Their conversation is as vast as the ocean, as fleeting as the birds in the sky, as transient as clouds… it is the longing for what is gone but knowing it is always there… earthly and spiritual, impermanent yet eternal.
